The 2012 Summer Institute for the Arts
The Summer Institute for the Arts (SIFTA) is a truly unique experience for artistic exploration and expression. We are thrilled to offer two programs this year that offer the opportunity to perform in a well-known, full-scale musical, as well as three other programs for visual art, music, drama, and movement. We are certain that your student, no matter his or her age, existing skill level, or talents, will find a place to create, share, and grow.

Art in the Woods
Ages: Students entering grades K-8, divided into three age ranges:
(a) Grades K-2, (b) Grades 3-5, (c) Grades 6-8
Dates: Week 1 - July 9-13, 2012, 9 AM - 4 PM | Week 2 - July 16-20, 2012, 9 AM - 4 PM
Location: Doub's Woods Park, Hagerstown, MD
Cost: $175 per week before May 31, 2012; $200 per week thereafter (cost includes $25 materials fee)
Artist Showcase: Friday, July 13, 2012, 3:30 - 4:30 PM | Friday, July 20, 2012, 3:30 - 4:30 PM
Kids crank up their creativity through hands-on activities and art projects taught by professional local artists. Students will experience a wide range of arts techniques, including sculpture, mixed media, printmaking, painting, drawing, and collage, all while learning about some of the greatest artists in history, including Picaso, Monet, Michelangelo, da Vinci, van Gogh, and more! Art projects will be tailored to the skill sets in each age range. Different curriculum and projects will be offered for each week, so students may sign up for both weeks without experiencing the same thing twice. Students will get the chance to show off their masterpieces to family and friends in an Artist Showcase on the last day of each week of camp from 3:30 - 4:30 PM.

Cost: $150 per week before May 31, 2012; $175 per week thereafter
Back by popular demand, Music Academy will be a week long journey into nighttime songs and bedtime stories. Students will work collaboratively with instructors and other campers to create choreography, play instruments, memorize scripts, and sing songs. Students will also focus on vocal enrichment through choral exercises and singing games. A final production of our show will conclude the week long camp. If you are interested in before or after care for an extra fee, please contact us.

Make your own show-stopping memories as you sing and dance in the style of the hit TV series! Our Gleeks will have fun learning vocal technique, stage presence, acting, and choreography while studying with ACT's talented instructors. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents (and hard work!) to their family and friends on Friday evening.

About Seussical, Jr.: A delight for children to perform, Seussical is a one-act musical based on the works of the beloved children's author. In this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza, Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination - Jojo. "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think" captures the show's spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisble world of the Whos.

About Into the Woods: An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch... who raps? They're all among the cockeyed characters in James Laphine and Stephen Sondheim's fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone's wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins as a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
